School Junk Food
Today, one third of American children are overweight. This may be due to junk food within schools. The article, “Sugar-Free School” by Scholastic Action, discusses important decisions about food within the school system. Food in our schools is unhealthy but a ban on junk food shouldn’t be allowed. It is the kids’ and their parents’ choice what they eat. Furthermore, the government can’t legally dictate the foods people eat, and obesity is up to that person to take care of. This freedom of food choice must remain available, and be practiced in schools.
Bullying
Everybody is picked on at some point, but extreme, prolonged bullying has serious effects. Today, many citizens, especially teens, are bullied whether it’s online, in school, physical, or emotional. The article, “Are Bullies Criminals?” introduces the argument that bullies are criminals. In the story, 15 year-old Phoebe Prince took her own life due to threats, insults, and other mistreatment towards her. Today there are laws against harassment, threats, stalking, verbal abuse, etc. which means bullies are breaking the law. Also, bullying ruins kids’ lives and yet parents will not take proper action to end their child’s misbehavior. Extreme bullying is a crime and must be enforced properly.
Outer Space Trip
“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise.” Not the Enterprise from Star Trek but the public vacationing Virgin Galactic Enterprise. “Your Next Vacation: Outer Space?” introduces the idea of a vacation into space. This three-hour trip 65 miles into the sky will allow passengers to experience many thrills of space like astronauts. Such an opportunity would be absolutely amazing. Being able to say that you've been in space, experiencing the high speeds and zero gravity, and the incredible sights that can be seen from space are all excellent incentives of this trip.
